Tests and Exams

Course Type
The manner is which course exams and tests are administered and proctored is dependent on the type of course you are taking and whether you are participating at one of the sites.

Courses by CD-ROM
Tests/exams taken for Navy students who are taking CD-ROM courses through NCPACE are administered and proctored by their command NCPACE POC. Tests/exams are shipped to the command's designated POC when that command's education request is approved. No Proctor Request Form is required for NCPACE students.

Students who are taking CD-ROM courses that are not funded through NCPACE (i.e., Navy College BSET, MEM Ashore) should follow the specific guidelines and procedures provided with their program and course materials and at the following links:

Courses by Satellite
Tests/exams taken by students taking satellite courses are administered and proctored at their site location.

Courses by Video Streaming
Students who are taking a video streamed course and are also associated with a site take tests/exams at that site location at the time announced by the course instructor.

Students who are enrolled in a video streamed course and who are NOT associated with a site must follow the procedures outlined below:

Student Guidelines/Procedures for Proctoring:

  1. Identify an accredited institution of higher education or military installation in your vicinity and obtain permission from a representative of that organization to provide proctoring services there. Authorized proctors include faculty members, employees at college/university testing centers, or employees at military education centers. The Proctor Request Form must be completed by you and the representative of the proctoring organization and returned to the Office of Distance Learning by the add/drop deadline for the current semester in which you are enrolling.
Please also provide the "Proctor Guidelines for Test/Exam Proctoring" information with your proctor. It is important that they understand our guidelines.
  2. Print out, complete, and fax the proctor form to the appropriate number (see proctor form).
  3. Clarify with your instructor date/time you should take test and call your proctor to make an appointment to take each required test. Present picture identification prior to testing.
  4. Provide an addressed pre-paid return envelope to the proctor. All materials sent by the proctor to the Office of Distance Learning must have tracking capability, whether by UPS, FedEx, or other carrier. If a student requests rapid delivery, the student is responsible for providing the proctor with an addressed pre-paid overnight-delivery envelope. The test must be mailed by the proctor only, never the student. Use the following address:

    Old Dominion University
    Mail Distribution
    127 Gornto TELETECHNET Center
    Norfolk, Virginia 23529

    5. Pay all administrative costs required by the proctoring institution.

Courses by Web
Typically, students taking pure web courses take exams and tests over the Internet. Refer to your syllabus or contact your instructor for details.

Make-Up Exams/Tests
Students who cannot take an exam at the time it has been scheduled must first contact the course instructor for permission to take the exam/test at a later time. If permission is granted, please ask the instructor to notify your site staff of this authorization. At the distant sites, make-up exams are administered on the Saturday following the regularly scheduled exam. Students should work with their site director to secure an exact time and location.

Students participating from one of the local centers normally take make-ups at the Learning Assessment Lab in Gornto. The instructors normally make this arrangement. Otherwise, if a student wishes to take a make-up at the local higher education center, the time and day should be coordinated with the center staff. Again, the staff will need to have the instructor's authorization before allowing students to take an exam at an alternate time.
