Southside Virginia Community College Employee and ODU Distance Learner Griles is "Outstanding"

Lois GrilesLois Griles, admissions and records specialist at Soutside Virginia Community College's J.H. Daniel campus, was recognized by Old Dominion University as the Outstanding Training Specialist Student Award recipient for 2005-2006. Griles, who completed her B.S. degree in Occupational and Technical Studies in May 2006, was selected from all eligible students in the program - from ODU's Norfolk campus and 43 distance learning locations. She is the first Distance Learning student to win this award.

Once a garment factory worker in South Boston, Griles often dreamed of earning a four-year degree as she worked at her machine. When the garment factory closed, she attended classes at SVCC's Daniel campus, where she completed an AAS in Information Systems Technology.

Soon after, she decided to attend ODU. Griles says her SVCC education prepared her well for the challenges as an ODU distance learner. She also noted that ODU professors were a key in her success.

"I didn't know if I could do it, but the instructors made it possible," she said.

So what's next for this standout? She's considering going on to earn a master's degree!
