Network and Technical Support Services

The ATS Network and Technical Support services department develops and supports technical infrastructure used in support of ODU Distance Learning such as the satellite network, video streaming, video encoding, video conferencing, TCP/IP network systems, and other distribution systems and media. The department is directly involved in development and deployment of delivery technologies in use, or for use, in Distance Learning. The Technical Support services department provides direct support to staff, students, faculty, and customers using ATS Network systems.
Webcasting and Video Streaming
The streaming of live and on-demand video is a growing and popular means of content distribution and interaction.ATS is able to provide video streams in multiple formats, and is able to store these files for viewing on demand.
ODU Distance Learning Video Streaming systems can distribute content for live distribution or store files for later viewing on demand.
ATS's state of the art video encoding systems can encode content for distribution across a variety of delivery technologies including web based live and archive and delivery to mobile devices (iPods, etc).
Content Distribution
Numerous agencies and organizations offer live, specialized workshops and conferences distributed via satellite. ATS Network Services offers both Ku-Band (analog and digital) and C-Band satellite reception of these programs by way of fixed or steerable satellite dishes. ATS can coordinate reception of these program offerings and schedule group viewing rooms at a variety of locations across the ODU campus and off-campus at the ODU Higher Education Centers. Classroom computer clusters with Internet connectivity and audio return can also be included for hybrid, two way interactivity. ATS can also connect classrooms to phone bridges for telephone related questions.
Satellite Uplinking
The TELETECHNET Center is an FCC licensed station for transmitting live or taped programming via satellites for regional or national distribution. Ku-Band (analog and digital) and C-Band delivery options are offered by way of steerable satellite dishes, with full redundancy. ATS can broadcast to any domestic satellite to accommodate your needs or on our full-time space on Galaxy 26 Programming can be encrypted for privacy or security with remote location compatibility services upon request.
Receiving Installation and Maintenance
Satellite Services offers complete design, installation and maintenance for receive sites to connect to the existing ATS Satellite Network, a national interconnect of major Universities. These services provide engineering support and the necessary receive equipment packages including smart cards for decoding the encrypted transmission signals. As an integral part of Old Dominion's Distance Learning mission, satellite connectivity is a priority supported by a full- time engineering team for quality assurance and confidence in signal integrity.
In addition to satellite capabilities, Academic Technology Services provides an array of content delivery and communication methodologies. The Gornto TELETECHNET Center is home to ATS's satellite dish farm offering downlinking and uplinking of programming, as well as full -featured videoconferencing and video streaming infrastructures.
Videoconferencing
A unique and cost effective way for people to meet and share information across distances is videoconferencing -- the two-way transmission of video, audio and data over digital phone lines or the Internet to one or multiple remote locations. Computer graphics, video footage, and overheads can be incorporated into the two-way communication. Clients use this service for training, administrative meetings, guest lectures, depositions, interviews, and classroom education.
